Innovative design for future climate resilience in the infrastructure and built environment sectors

Summary

This Defra Small Business Research Initiative Infrastructure (SBRI) Design for Future Climate competition fulfils a commitment set out in the National Adaptation Programme report and the 2011 National Infrastructure Plan.

Defra is inviting proposals from companies, academia or from consortia of interested parties connected to the infrastructure and built environment sectors. The competition scope, which applies to England only for the built environment sector but UK-wide for the infrastructure sector, will be open to those who have already developed their own feasibility studies for such designs and can clearly demonstrate the ability to produce prototype designs for demonstration by 30 March 2014

Defra will award contracts up to a total value of £500k in 2013/14 spread over a maximum of ten successful applicants. The competition will be managed by Defra, supported by the Technology Strategy Board.

Defra is seeking to support business opportunities from climate change adaptation for UK businesses, and anticipate that the adaptation ideas may have wider applicability outside the UK. It considers that the focus of innovation of this competition has wider benefits, helps to support economic growth and gives an incentive for the small and medium business sector to be creative with their products. Being climate resilient can lead to increased competitiveness, both domestically and internationally.
